STYFC Reserves were beaten 16-0 by Newton Aycliffe FC in a friendly at Moor Lane, with the home side leading 6-0 at half-time.
The result was difficult, but the context is important. Newton Aycliffe are from a much higher division and had a more experienced group of players. They were by far the better team on the night, and the scoreline reflected the difference between the two sides.
From our perspective, this was an opportunity to learn. Matches such as this can provide valuable experience for a developing squad, particularly when facing opposition operating at a higher level. The challenge was clear throughout, and we must use the evening as part of the longer-term development of the Reserves.
First Half
Newton Aycliffe took the lead in the eighth minute and added further goals in the 14th, 22nd, 27th and 35th minutes. Their sixth goal arrived in the 41st minute, leaving us 6-0 behind at the interval.
The first half underlined the gap in experience between the teams. Newton Aycliffe were the stronger side and established a significant advantage before the break. For our players, it was a demanding introduction to the pace and level of a higher-division opponent.
Bates was replaced by Cant in the 40th minute, shortly before the home side scored their sixth goal. While the scoreline was already heavily against us, the changes gave members of the squad an opportunity to take part in a difficult but worthwhile fixture.
The most important aspect for us was to recognise the standard required at this level. The players were exposed to a match in which the opposition controlled the outcome, and that experience should help inform their progress in future fixtures.
Second Half
Newton Aycliffe continued to add to their lead after the restart, scoring in the 51st, 53rd and 57th minutes. Tate replaced Chanyau in the 48th minute, while further changes were made in the 60th minute: Timileyin came on for Knox, Moran replaced Dixon, and Hope came on for Taylor.
The home side scored again in the 63rd, 69th, 71st, 74th, 78th, 80th and 82nd minutes to complete the 16-0 result.
There is no disguising that the second half remained challenging for us. Newton Aycliffe’s superiority continued, and we were unable to prevent them from extending their advantage. That is an area we must address collectively as we continue to develop: the group needs to learn how to respond when a match moves decisively in the opposition’s favour.
At the same time, the substitutions gave more players valuable exposure to this level of football. The experience gained by the squad, particularly by those with less experience, is part of the wider development journey.

Performance Summary
The overall performance was measured against a very strong and more experienced opponent, who were clearly the better team. The 16-0 scoreline shows the areas in which we need to improve, particularly when competing against teams from a higher division and dealing with sustained pressure.
Our main positive is the learning opportunity the match provided. The Reserves squad gained experience of a demanding level, while the substitutions allowed several players to be involved. Robson was named player of the match, offering individual recognition within a difficult collective evening.
